100% agree. People like Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Eddie Izzard, Trey Parker & Matt Stone and more recently Bill Burr and Hannah Gadsby are often way ahead of the social curve.
I think what's most interesting about Johnson is that he's the political equivalent of that in action. He's been masquerading as a fool for a long time. Saying things that other politicians won't say and side-stepping the consequences. He was one of the architects of Brexit as a journalist, often spouting humourous columns that were incredibly xenophobic and we let him off - because he's 'just Boris'.
The left needs to find its funny again - and fast. If they're going to win over hearts and minds, they can't do so with a rod up their backsides and removing humour at all costs. Weaponising offence in this way will push the centre ground to the right.
