A friend of mine, heavy on the feminism, light on the critical thought is now on a funded trip to be an ambassador for a particular racial subsection of feminists, she’s talking at a lot of conferences at being a strong empowered woman. Most of it seems to be getting herself in a bikini as often as possible.
She’s also an Instagram digital clothes hanger for a fashion brand which she advertises daily to her followers. After the millionth time of saying the fashion industry is run by exploitative white men - l did the research for her and found her brand was actually run by brown family with links to very unethical treatment of its staff and it vastly underpays women employees in sweatshops both here in the U.K. and abroad.
Her response? Everyone is a work in progress…. It’s difficult. She can try to be better.
Feminism like hers is about optics. It’s faux-feminism. It’s heading out to do a speaking tour to show your Instagram fans how passionate you are - but not dropping a brand deal because it’s inconvenient for your wallet. She likes the attention that comes from taking her clothes off (from both men and women) - but that isn’t feminism. That’s a heady blend of capitalism and operant conditioning by idiots. It pays to know the difference and not pretend being easily influenced is an ideology.

That’s my take on a similar problem from last year. Thanks for a fun read. :o)
