A good point and well made. But the facts of history are there, what is written down contributes to the written record. Where possible we should be going beyond what is immediately available and finding the facts. The story I linked is the story of one of many Black sailors after The Battle of Trafalgar, it’s not well represented in the historical record, but it’s there in the centre of London for millions and millions of tourists to see. The issue comes with the fact it isn’t in textbooks, it isn’t included in tours (although I tell everyone when I go past), it is history because it’s true, it’s not well known history and that is a problem with how it is recorded and disseminated.

The reason I don’t like Black History Month is that I think facts like these need to be taught all 12 months of the year, not tokenistically discussed in October as a separate facet of history.
