Agreed - but it's worth remembering that human beings are complicated, and it generally wasn't a 'rock up and shoot civilians' affair from the get go; those things are the result of psychological pressure and the degradation of the self.

And I don't think of this as a devil's advocate issue. If this man has been involved in genoicde and murder then he should be tried for it.... but as a society, it's important to ask the question 'why?' and 'what makes someone do these things'. Devil's advocate suggests that I'm advocating for someone evil, I'm not - I'm advocating for curiosity about evil; that is a different thing.

I cannot excuse the actions of an Einsatzgruppen member, they should be tried for the crimes committed, but I can at least approach what happened with an appreciation of the full psychological complexity. If we don't understand what made rational human beings into killing monsters then we're doomed to repeat it.
