Agreed. I don't think we should be celebrating the mass killing of anyone - but I do think we should be looking at some of the nuances and complexity at play for people in specific times and specific places. That's not to give everyone a hard-pass and a high-five for being awful, rather to seek to understand the antecedents and how easy it became to radicalise the Latvian population with a subversive murderous ideology. Riga was a real eye-opener for me about the sheer complexity of European politics and the overtly simplistic narrative most of Western Europe has about World War II.
