Alas not on the BBC adaptation, they brought in Jack Thorne…. He’s the go-to guy for everything in TV because he can consistently hit a B+ and his work arrives on time (mostly because he’s got research teams lined up for the next project and a four year backlog). Unfortunately, they also handed it over to Bad Wolf. The Dr Who production company….. so what we got was a messy on the nose script which had the doctor who levels of peril… ie none. Northern Lights is a book for adults masquerading as a children’s book - it’s dark and sinister and beautiful and terrifying…. Jack Thorne served up a mediocre messy script, Bad Wolf mangled it (apparently was a terrible shoot) and the BBC did their usual job of ramming it full of nepotism. Was still better than the Golden Compass - but nowhere near what Pullman deserves for his work.
