All the pupils on the graph are those who have free school meals, regardless of ethnicity. The observation is simply that, given the (greyed out) lines of pupils from other ethnic groups who get free school meals, white british poor kids are doing the worst (aside from traveller children)

There are many reasons why that could be - and as much as a simple answer of 'white poor kids are lazy' is an interpretation that a lot of people in the UK have. They are often demonised and reports of benefits scrounging families are paraded through the press and put on TV all the time.

There's also a wider issue here that talks to the nature of disadvantage. There are many advantages to being poor, but not white, that don't get talked about. Church attendance for example, the specific geographic location of those children. Many white poor are in rural communities with few amenities whilst London schools containing poorer BIPOC students experience a greater subsidy and access to the arts.

In short.... there are millions of complex and interlocking factors that create 'privilege', skin colour is certainly one of them, but an overfocus on one thing detracts from a holistic approach to the others. Let's say you're right, and all white kids are inherently lazy. The question is why? And why would we tolerate that assumption for white kids but not BIPOC kids? What can we do about it - because it seems, to my mind at least, that the status quo isn't working.
