And just think how much money they'd make if they moved the monarchy and their officials out and filled it with stuff from the vaults. The palace of Versailles is doing just fine and is one of the most visited places in the world contributing far more to the French national coffers than Buck Pal does to ours.

The Crown Estate always seems like a royalist fiddle.... it looks generous, but a lot of the money attributed to 'Royals' come from visits to places like The Tower of London and other historical sites which would continue to be just fine without Royal intervention. There's also the tendency to include things like 'The Kate Effect' and people who might come and see Buck Pal (amongst other things) when talking about the money they bring in. Those same people often overlook money spent by councils, police forces, the military, and security teams when they do their calculations on the cost of the monarchy.

If I'm honest, I don't think we're breaking even and even if we are, I don't think we're getting a lot of bang for our buck. Furthermore, I don't think we're allowed to know that.... because if the Royal family was bringing in the dough as a public entity, they might not need to be exempted from the FOI laws and actually put the financial situation out in the open. Transparency doesn't apply above parliament.
