And we're off again! I thought you might take a birthday break.
She is indeed an individual and responsible for her own thoughts. She's also a racist. But she doesn't think she's a racist because she's a liberal NYC Obama voting kinda gal. That was one of her defences. The sort of people who whack up I support BLM posters but don't do any thinking pretend they have learned the lessons - but most of them simply haven't. I like my racists out in the open where I can see them.
I do think rapists and victims should sit down and talk actually - but only if its safe to do so. This is the process of restorative justice and I have a lot of respect for Thordis Elva and Tom Stranger - and their talk is worth looking up if it doesn't cause you any undue mental distress. I think restorative justice is perhaps the greatest tool we have at our disposal to enact genuine change - but it requires buy in.
And yes... she isn't liberal. That's my point. She's faux liberal. She thinks she's a liberal but she's really a racist and has no idea why. Liberals like me are aware that racists exist but we don't believe in state interference to resolve it. If you want to see that in action then you should probably go and read my conflict with James Finn. https://medium.com/p/86d6cb79aa11
I think we do away with racism not by a process of ostracising people or shouting at them until they comply. People will comply by pretending. That's what Amy Cooper did. I think you resolve racism by genuinely being liberal - and that means ensuring neither the left attempts to infringe on the rights of the individual. Be that via state interference or through the soft and insidious power of social media.
