Another great article — and bang on as always. When I arrived at Medium, I was genuinely excited that I could build a nice little outlet for my writing. I took last month off, completely irritated and deflated as a result of the new Medium magazines and am thinking about ending my subscription.
I fit that bracket of Indie writer. I’ve made upwards of £1000 in my time here over the last year, and most of that was as a result of curation and being approached by editors to see if I wanted to have my work featured.
I neither have the time nor the inclination to write for Medium sponsored magazines and have been genuinely disappointed to see the same names and the same familiar names writing article after article on the homepage day after day. Wash rinse repeat and yawn. Some of these journalists are lazy. Some of their work is lazy. And it’s becoming a self congratulatory club.
I enjoyed the variety of views. I believed that good writing would always come through. I believed that Medium could be a place for intelligent discussion and that eventually all the How to write writing about writing and 20,000 ways to smash your career goals before breakfast articles would slowly fade away and be replaced. It seemed to start to happen — and then Medium jumped the shark.
I believed that quality would out perform both consistency and rhetoric based populism, instead Medium seems to have become an equal and opposite to Breitbart. It has all the left wing ferocity and evangelical self righteousness on the issue du jour, but rarely anything of interest to add. Another online echo chamber that I don’t really want to be part of.
The only real way to get back to quality is to ditch Medium magazines and curate again from the ground up. That was working. Literary based socialism and writer empowerment. Ironically the left leaning Medium is working to a right wing champagne socialist model of jobs for the elite.
And the rest of us get to drown in the delicious irony.
