Apparently, according to the very knowledgeable Teed Rockwell, it’s due to squeezing an English phrase through Yiddish, which has a subjunctive case. This nuance is then lost on English speakers - but gained prominence due to the prevalence of Jewish-American comedians, and filtered out into the general population from there. Language is ace! :o)
