As a bird, I'm delighted to be unpacking any worm selection, though I am predominantly a fish eating bird - I appreciate the variety of diets all birds have. As an aside, Simon is a guy and guy is arguably a gendered term whilst I am a flightless genderless bird (see my pinned story for more on this). :o)
And yes, you're right - I think there are plenty of good reasons why some feminists might move towards misandry - and there are perfectly valid reasons why they might hate men - and there are perfectly valid arguments why all women should be wary of all men and those can be brought to the fore. My comment isn't on the validity of those arguments, rather the packaging by which they are delivered. As I said at the end of the article, i think the vast majority of people are muddling through regardless of their genitals and getting it right or wrong - but as the exrteme voices become normalised, the centre ground moderates get hollowed out. Everyone picks a side - because 'you're either part of the problem or you're not' - I think this is a false dichotomy and everyone is part of the problem and everyone is part of the solution, we simply have to cede ground to where is most useful and expedient.
I also think there's a lesson here - I was a drama teacher for many years - and both girls and boys want to be communicated with in different ways. I now work in mental health, which is also overrepresented with women and this is a very good point. Write an article about your thoughts and expertise and stick it into Medium. Tag me in it and I'll write a rebuttal (if I disagree) or an endorsement if I don't - better still, send it into Simon and become part of this conversation. Not much point in him creating a space if no Penguins or people want to use it. :o)
