As Elle Beau and I often fall out about — you can’t take the identity out of identity politics, but you have to ask the question who sets the identities we’re talking about. Who gets to decide what’s an important part of someone’s identity and what isn’t?
I’m all for inclusive arguments and that’s where I’ll align with writers pushing for social change. We have the same end goal and a totally different methodology. I think you can only make change via being economically inclusive. In which case identity ceases to matter, it’s covered in the wider inclusive argument.
Steve is an excellent writer and you’re absolutely right. He’s the right person at the right time and his work has a solid brilliance that makes me think that everything is going to be okay in the long term. I’ve yet to be able to debate him on anything and it’s very frustrating, but we’re in complete agreement on almost everything.
Glad you’re finding my writing useful as well — keep engaging with people in good faith disagreement and slowly, very slowly, people will come round to your way of thinking.
Thanks for your kind words! :o)
