As it happens, I’ve landed on my flippers with landlords. Not family, nor friends - but Irish. This area of London has a lot of Irish ex-pats. This particular set of landlords are not aware of the going price for London rent, I sort everything out for the house and as such I am getting what I’d estimate is a 2003 rent without 20 years of inflation. They do not have to pay letting agents, rarely get involved in maintenance issues and we do not bother each other. They are lovely people, we like each other, understand what the other wants and capitalism be damned.

If they die or decide to sell the house, I will not be able to afford to live in London. Actually, that’s not true. I could just about afford it - but the drop in life quality would be too much to bear and I’d move out.

And that is how penguins afford nice things. :o)
