Basic human rights and dignity are not subjective metrics at all, on this we can definitely agree. But looking around the world, I think that there are far more problems outside of the liberal western democracies than inside them. In short.... right amount of effort, wrong direction. There are some very specific problems in your democracy that need to be addressed but for the most part things are moving in the right direction. Slowly.

In a culture centred around a hierarchy of actualisation, there needs to be an effort to drop collective thinking. Actualisation happens on an individual level - you have to encourage people to think for themselves about morality, not to be told what to think or what is right and wrong. I don't think anything in identity politics is encouraging anyone to think for themselves. It becomes a bun fight and a default hierarchy emerges in which the loudest voices are the ones that must be given deference. The loudest voices are not necessarily the most intelligent, insightful or the people we should be hearing from.

We're actually in agreement. The answer is about creating a win/win. Absolutely nothing about the emergence of the social justice left, or indeed the alt-right has created meaningful discussion. They fuel each other. On the left Identity politics has given everyone the illusion of progress but simply created echo-chambers into which more and more people pile in. Challenging the receieved wisdom of those at the top of the hierarchy will see you labeled as 'traitor' and excluded from the group.

Egalitarianism is the way forward... but an insistence of viewing the world as a series of competing hierarchies is like saying 'running is the way to get places quickly' then immediately shooting yourself in the foot.
