Because a polite society is not necessarily a less racist one…. it’s simply one where racism is less visible. The subconscious internalism of racism would bubble up unchecked leaving society far more likely to be hijacked by demagogues who say ‘what everyone is thinking, but nobody is brave enough to say’ — see Trump in the post Obama era.
