Burnt City was my first experience of PunchDrunk. I had resisted attending before, largely because everyone who ever recommended it to me was low-key exactly the sort of bourgeois theatre twat I can't stand (they're my friends and I love them dearly, but they move in bizarre tatty circles). Eventually, cheap tickets became available for Burnt City on TodayTix (get it if you haven't already) and I got to experience it for myself with the significant other penguin.

I enjoyed it. I felt it was a bit twatty. A bit like an English essay about literature where you're invited to read into it as much as you like. I've got a decent grounding Greek mythology and the fall of Troy and even I found it a bit baffling and disorientating. The significant other penguin didn't know what was going on. My non-theatre friend went a few weeks before me (we grew up working class in the same city but she now works in finance and I don't) left after 45 minutes because she thought it was wanky and had no idea what was going on. She'd paid about three times the amount I'd paid and she was livid.

Immersive theatre is spectacular sometimes. But it's definitely wanky and aimed at the collective groupthink of intellectuals. I feel that way about theatre a lot these days.

Still. Glad you enjoyed it.
