but NOTHING justified anyone to become a Nazi unless they identified with their disgusting and inhuman cause.
That’s you. A comment ago.
There are ALWAYS EXCEPTIONS to every human evil.
That’s you this comment.
I’m an argumentative penguin, not a killer whale. If you talk in absolutes then you must adhere to absolutes. Penguins and killer whales are both black and white but the sheer complexity of human experience usually throws up buckets of grey.
You see the problem with people who talk in absolutes? Language is important. Absolutes are the language of the unthinking. What you’ve identified as ‘defending Nazis’ (and therefore terrible) is actually historical curiosity. If all Nazis are bad, we don’t learn about Rabe or Plagge. We don’t question the descent into the Einsatzgruppen. ‘Ordinary Men’ has just been turned into a TV series (on Netflix I think). It’s a terrifying but necessary book and comes highly recommended.
It is the unthinking absolute thought process which is highjacked by totalitarians. If I told you I was off to kill Nazis, you’d think ‘great!’ - you wouldn’t think ‘I wonder who gets to define that word Nazi’. The defences you’ve got are compassion and curiosity. Use them both at all times. :o)
