Emmeline Pankhurst was married to Richard Pankhurst - a barrister and English socialist. Her child was Sylvia Pankhurst, also featured in this sentence, which means Emmeline at least did choose to get married and have children. Five in fact, Christabel and Adela were also notable suffragettes and Emmeline adopted more during the First World War.

Sylvia didn't marry, but she did have a child... who she confusingly named Richard after her Dad. As you suggest she DID refuse to marry her anarchist tea-room running Italian boyfriend and had Richard out of wedlock, the reason why Emmeline Pankhurst stopped speaking to her.

Given they both had children - and they fell out about Sylvia's views on marriage, I think you've somewhat simplified the situation here. Christabel would've been a better bet. She didn't marry, or have any kids, but she did move in with her mother to raise those war kids - and did eventually adopt a girl called Betty.

British history is the best history. Once you get beyond the genocide and naval battles.
