Feel like I'm going to take a different approach to everyone else here. There's nothing embarrassing about buying condoms, so I don't know why the woman was embarrassed when John didn't ring them up. If there's a policy in place which says he doesn't need to sell anything he morally objects to selling then that's the policy. Could he have handled it differently, probably. Did he need to? Not really. Did she need to be embarrassed about buying condoms? Nope.
The equivalent might be a jewish cashier who doesn't want to sell pork products. Would such a fuss have been made over some sausages? I doubt it. I see no difference between having a barbeque and banging your husband morally speaking, the 'embarrassment' here speaks to a certain type of prudishness around having sex, not to religious intolerance.
That's my two cents at least. :o)
