Fences is one of the best plays ever written, and I'm going to have to go back and read the entire Pittsburgh cycle again sometime. I side with Wilson's position on the Black Arts Movement and setting up entirely new theatres and entirely new structures. Instead, over here in the UK at least, we have assimilated black artists into white led structures and called it 'progressive'.

A burgeoning black theatre, with black directors, black actors and most importantly a permanent home for this work is needed. We've got a few good black theatre companies - but they're shuffled around all over the place. We do have Kwame Kwei-Armah at the Young Vic now - when he's not in danger of being eviscerated by angry feminists.

For reference there was a controversy which kicked off on Medium before being picked up by some fairly biased journalists at a left wing newspaper.... https://medium.com/@toriandsarahburnbright/tree-a-story-of-gender-and-power-in-theatre-23b8a2468224 It's all come to nothing now - but was an interesting opening salvo in the women/black men showdown at the end of the #MeToo era but before the BLM take off.
