For the record I was being funny. Dark humour is a British tradition - in this case, glib off-handedness about something truly terrible.

I do wonder if the trial should've been held elsewhere in the US, but I'm not familiar with what laws do and don't apply across states - so I presumed there was a legal reason for it.
