"Goebbels was in favor of free speech for views he liked. So was Stalin. If you’re really in favor of free speech, then you’re in favor of freedom of speech for precisely the views you despise. Otherwise, you’re not in favor of free speech" - Noam Chomsky.
The second Universitie began insisting on no-platforming and safe spaces - they began the inevitable process of a slide towards this position. A university is a place of learning - when you begin to use them as propaganda institutions for one side over the other, then you generate a backlash. Arguing which side is at fault is pointless and reductive. It doesn't matter. You're either in favour of free speech or you're not.
I'm a left wing libertarian. There's a place for right wing voices in the discourse. Out in the open, where they can be debated and their arguments dismantled. The gradual conflation of post-structural thought into University was a stupid own goal. Sure it felt good to ban people from campus, but you reap what you sow. Identity politics and it's tendency to promote 'self-truth' above reasoning and sensible discourse has reignited the right - and, as much as I hate to say it, they've got a point.
