Good article. I think people forget that Anne Frank is the story, she didn't write the story. The Diary of Anne Frank cannot be separated from the historical context of Anne Frank. Without what happened to her, you basically have a mediocre diary filled with some teenage angst. Having said that, there are interesting arguments to be made for why Americans in particular have chosen to focus on it. Something one of my regular readers brought up on my piece on the subject - you have a lot of interesting other history to explore without outsourcing your learning to Amsterdam.
