Great article. Here in the U.K. we have armed police capable of executing terrorists on London Bridge within 8 minutes. That thought is terrifying. They only get deployed when situations really go very south very fast.

I would suggest the US creates a similar system, whereby the act of calling in ‘the cavalry’ is followed by an instant independent inquiry. Unless the officer who called them in can justify why they were used and why no other option was available they face charges of assault with a deadly weapon.

I doubt the US will ever implement such a scheme. It punishes police officers for using deadly force and puts a cognitive gap and block between judgment, jury and executioner.

Above all else it would save hundreds of lives of the public per annum and keep all the gun wielding psychopaths in one highly trained and tightly controlled regiment.
