Have been in a similar position with my younger brother before - nothing is reassuring at times like his. I hope your friend recovers fully - I also don't fear death for myself, but mostly because of the Dao De Jing gifted me by a dying auntie rather than Julian Barnes - but I have yet to make peace with others not being around when I still am. :o/
