Here's the thing, you can't change horses mid-stream. The economic argument about betterment for all isn't the same argument as the race argument... the race argument is a subsection of the betterment for all argument - and it's a divisive one because it pushes the white working class into the role of villain. What identity politics did was split the working class white from the working class black and said 'skin colour matters above all else' - and the resultant demos shift to the right indicated it wasn't an argument which could be a successful strategy - but the left doubled down and promoted angry voices.

Now the left is a collection of middle class white folks and BIPOC folks lecturing each other about terminology while Rome burns. The right doesn't need to pretend very hard to be the saviour of the working class, because it needs to do one thing, appeal to them more than the absolute shit-show of a divided left. Identity politics took the economic argument, the democracy and voting argument and crapped all over it in the name of virtue signalling - and I've got a horrible feeling it's too late to put the whole thing back in the box. I'm not convinced the left has the level of support it needs - and an appeal to democracy only works if things go the way you want them to.

There's nothing anti-democratic about anti-racism because it's a good aim with a flawed methodology. The right might succeed in delegitimising democracy and I'm sure they'll give it a go - but the identity politics left needs to take a long hard look at it's puritanical insistence that their creed MUST be accepted without debate and wonder whether that's democratic too. You can't have democracy without discussion and the left hasn't been very good at discussion for a long time. You either agree or you're a bigot. And bigots aren't allowed democracy.
