Hey Brian, thanks for commenting.

1. On this point we're in complete agreement. Utterly self inflicted. That doesn't mean that celebrities like JKRr aren't allowed an opinion, just that there's always going to be kickback when they express it in public. I do have a problem with 'cancel-culture' and it's relationship to identity politics and the tendency of adherents not to do due dilligance on their thought process. I go into it a lot more in my most recent article 'in defence of the Harper Letter'

2. On this we're in complete agreement too. JKR wrote Harry Potter with a heteronormative white bias because she's heterosexual and white - and she played identity politics after the fact. It blew up in her face and she's now reaping the reward of claiming accolades for things she never intended. Conversely, there shouldn't be personal retrospective criticism for her writing based on the sociological norms of today when the books were written years before 'being woke' was a thing.

3. On this one we partly agree, simply becuase of the ever expanding pressure of identity politics and what will become cultural iconoclastism. The 'with us or against us' mentality means that simply asserting the work is good or that you enjoy it, indepedently of the political beliefs of the author/creator will leave you in the 'against us' camp. Your well made point relies on the thoughts and decisions of individuals to stop supporting an artist or creative, identity poltiics is more about the pressure of groups acting on individuals. Social conformity is the price of inclusion and will end up being that if you enjoy puport to enjoy Harry Potter then by extension you are transphobic. We're not there yet.... but we will be.

Thanks for the comment and continuing the discussion. We agree on a great deal of things and it's been interesting to consider my article in light of your points.
