Hey Gil, sad times on the disagreement, but that’s what Medium is all about and how dialogue happens. I’m not a conservative, I’m a liberal. And therein lies the problem with the bile — I have no problem with Conservatives being in favour of the Royal Family. They’re Conservatives. They want to Conserve. Keeping things the same is pretty much in the job description — the Royal Family has stayed within the same 4 families since John of Gaunt. They’re the most successful Conservatives of all times.
The Royal Family will only become obsolete when public opinion changes — and there remains this consistent blind spot around the monarchy that is frustrating. I find it frustrating that the same people lecturing me on how the future world will be shaped and how inclusive it must be, continue to clandestinely fly the flag for Conservatism in it’s truest form without recognising that paradox. There aren’t enough Conservatives to keep the Royal Family afloat — they need the willing support of ill-informed liberals.
To address your point, I’m not convinced The Queen is an out and out KKK member. The firm is default white supremicist by it’s constitution. The branding is white supremecist, the individuals are not. And for someone who has been a republican as long as I have…. I can assure you that you won’t win any Royalist hearts and minds by directly attacking the Royal Family. Your arguments have to be more oblique.
If you want to be more outraged — then I can recommend this article. Where I blame liberals for Prince Andrew.
And no. I won’t be changing my use of the word vagina. I say that because I’m equally likely to use Penis, dick, asshole, asshat, cocklord, or bellend across my writing — whilst they might be steeped in a sexist history I don’t believe they are inherently offensive and are used entirely for humour purposes. I don’t hold with the weaponisation of faux-offence and/or social shame as a way of controlling the language people use. It goes against the concept of liberalism. This may make me part of the problem, but it’s all about which hills you want to stick your flag into. If my use of the word vagina offends you more than the elitism of the Royal Family, we have very different priorities.
Aside from calling me a sexist douchebag, which is an ad hominem (and entirely unnecessary) attack, I think you’ve added to the discussion. I dislike personal attacks because, similarly to faux offence, they do little to forward the discussion. By all means feel free to debate my points and question my writing — that’s what I believe Medium is for. I generally stop responding if the ad-hominem attacks continue much past the first message — and quit social media last year for that reason. Have a great day and thanks for reading even if you did not entirely agree.
