Hmmm. It's a toughie. I think it's probably a good idea to spend some time with the family and to rethink things. I'm not sure that 247 years of democracy can be given away, not when it's done democratically. It's sort of Oxymoronic. That said, what happens next needs to be carefully scrutinised.

I think Democracies must be very careful to calibrate in the new digital landscape and I'm not sure this is helping. Reading down the comments it seems that almost everyone agrees with you. That's the problem. it's always been the problem. If the information you're getting is only from those with whom you already agree, the shock of 71 million people disagreeing with you is going to be enormous.

But the left need to recalibrate rather than retreat.

The Left has long been pulled into discussions about the nature of justice, the conceptualisation of fairness, equality and what sort of society it wants to build. That's all to the good, but its the sort of Middle Class problem that people can intellectualise over dinner parties and it isn't where the political right or those right of centre want to be - nor is it the place where the villains (men, mostly white men) want to be. Nor is it the place where poor people want to be.

The Left has been moving left and Biden was appalling to his progressive base by picking a running mate who didn't do very well in the primaries. The Democrats didn't leave enough time to change and so the actual democracy part of Democrat likely felt somewhat fixed. On the final night of the campaign, Harris stood on stage, at a VIP concert, with multi-millionaire people of all skin colours holding the simultaneous inferred position that poor people are easily duped idiots, that Black people need help, that Women would come out and vote for her because they have identical genitals and that she would bring a united America together, whilst continuing to sell arms to Israel. To say that the messaging was confusing is an understatement.

The Left needs to get back to doing what it set out to do. Moving money from where it is pooled to where it is needed. Everything else (pretty much) is immaterial, including subjective feelings of oppression. Everyone is oppressing everyone else, but in a capitalist system the only people really oppressed are the poor. They showed up for Trump. He won't help them. But you aren't helping them either. Every Democrat needs to reflect, and reflect carefully. Democracy is still working - just about, it's throwing up results Democrats don't understand. They need to work on why, not blame others.
