I agree. In most instances there will be a choice in favour of the primary caregiver... and in most cases that will be Mum. But not in all cases. And not in all situations. The blanket conscription doesn't take that into account, it presumes at the point of delivery who is doing what. It is this presumption I have a problem with. This presumption keeps women off the battlefield, but it also keeps them out of boardrooms. The man's place is on the battlefield, is the opposite but equal mantra to 'the woman's place is in the home'. In many cases this may be observably true.... but in a society which prides itself on questioning those assumptions, those assumptions must always be questioned. :o)
