I believe Mikael is being sincere.... feminism means whatever the person using the word wants it to mean. Your definition of feminism might mean a push towards equal rights - mine does too. We are concordant with our meanings.
But when we talk about unapologetically advoacting for anything, we remove the ability to apologise when things go wrong. Amber Heard, Tara Reade being two notable examples. In those cases, not immediately jumping into bashing Johnny Depp and Joe Biden respectively was seen as 'anti-feminist' - when in fact it was 'pro-equal treatment under law'.
Because 'feminism' can mean whatever the user wants it to mean - it's been possible for elements of misandry to sneak into the discourse. Looks like feminism, sounds like feminism, but really is just 'hating men'. And yes, your stats will show men are the more violent sex - and that needs work, but that isn't what this article is about.
In this story Mikael explained how a female writer with 44K followers singled him out for public humilitation and nearly pushed him off the platform and into depression- and your response is 'he should explain himself'. Have we learned nothing about power imbalances? Do you think that was a reasonable and fair way to treat someone?
A push for equality means a push for fairness - and if you think he was treated fairly for his 'lost heart' comment, then we have very different interpretations of what constitutes fairness. If you think taking a global event and making generalisations about half the world's behaviour is a good way to combat any power imbalance then we're on a hiding to nowhere. There are plenty of writers on this platform who have heavily monetised the victimisation of their self identified group and who make sweeping generalisations about members of the outgroup.
I'm with him. Gender equality is a much better phrase because the word 'feminism' has been eroded in the last five years.. Is this brand of misandry-cum-feminism making the world a safer place for women, for BIPOC or for LGBTQ+ people? I'm not convinced it is - if the feminism that I want to advocate for is going to come back, we've got to get a much better standard of discourse, one that's free from ideology and lazy ad-hominem attack. I suspect that was the point Mikael was trying to make .
