I can assure you that I spend most of my time disagreeing with people, yourself, Jeanete Espinoza and Jeremey Helligar whose writing I very much admire but whose methodology on how to reduce racism I don't agree with. I also spend a fair bit of time disagreeing with people on my own stories.
I agree with you. There's definitely a global shift going on - and the main difference between us is where we place the importance of the economical argument. i see identity politics as a way of making disadvantaged groups fight amongst themselves rather than pushing for a totally inclusive and progressive form of socialism.
Identity poltiics has grouped the white working class with the affluent middle class and the black working class with the black middle class. Whilst there are definite advantages to being white working class - they still represent a significant number of swing voters in the USA. Identity politics has allowed demagoguery to take hold and that's not good for BIPOC or the white working class.
Meanwhile, as you've pointed out, the white middle class can simply go through the motions of pretending to care with lip service and click-activism. There's no advantage to them to enact meaningful change in any direction. By far the best thing the right wing ever does is getting the left to fight itself.
We want the same outcome, we have different routes there. Routes that are fundamentally at odds with each other. Disagreement is not the same as oppression - but I firmly believe the world won't get better with identity politics. You can believe that's because I'm a super wealthy male white Republican if you want - I don't play identity politics. I'm a penguin and as a result people often infer their own villain onto the space where my identity should be.
I'm a fan of disagreement and I'm a fan of polite discourse - because that's how democracies function. I disagree with you and I'll call you out and explain why I think you're wrong. Then at least people can learn from the discussions we have and make their own minds up. If I call you out, I'll do it with the same respect I afford everyone else in the world. Equality is equality, it doesn't have to be nice.
Having said that. I still want you to keep writing on Medium - because although I disagree with your methodology around race, I love your fire and I love your style.
