I can tell you how that’s happened…. Woke middle class liberals want to be seen to be inclusive… so they’re now making ‘inclusive TV and theatre’ and sitting very proudly behind a body of work that is usually a) shit and b) stereotypical.
These execs find middle class minority folks who write the sort of thing that white liberals want to read. They all went to boarding school or university together and all have an agreed definition of what they want to write - much of it is stereotypical storytelling, often done very badly and in a tokenistic way because the storytellers themselves aren’t particularly skilled - they’re just drawn from a smaller available pool of writers.
And so the quality of the work goes down and becomes terrible. Minority writers will suffer in the long run…. Because this tokenism isn’t a patch on finding amazing minority writers who are supremely skilled. August Wilson didn’t need a patronising pat on the back on his way into the industry…. He just blew people away with his writing.
If white liberals really cared about making the creative world more diverse, they’d resign. The job of ‘selecting’ could go to someone in a minority group who will be free to pick any work they think is good enough, by any writer about any subject.
But that would mean middle class white people giving up their coffee dates and being able to tell each other how progressive they are… so instead we get the continuation of the theatre of virtue. It’s bad for the arts, it’s bad for creativity, it’s bad for good writers and, in the long run, will be bad for talented writers from minority groups who are being told to write in their own race based suffering niche.
