I did have a thought about irony on my way to work.... There's an irony here hidden in plain sight - that women did better on the Titanic than elsewhere in Maritime disaster.

They seemed to only have done better because of a strict adherence to a hierarchy and the crew following chain of command issued by a Captain prepared to enforce the rules. The more chaotic a sinking is, either by time or resources constraints, the worse off women become.

Isn't this a difficult to explain irony in favour of patriarchy? It is adherence to patriarchy and the Captain as enforcer that ensured women were 3 times more likely to survive than the men.

Damn it, now I'm going to have to turn this whole thing into an article and I already have a busy week at work! :o/
