I do not write fiction for this very reason - I can only write scripts. I can only write what characters say to each other because I get overwhelmed with how much or how little information to put in. When it comes to writing dialogue, the same thing applies. Too much and the dialogue becomes turgid and expository, too little and it becomes baffling. Most good writing for scripts has characters telling each other things without ever actually telling each other the thing - and perhaps talking about something else entirely.
Always a fan of the gaps.
