I do think there's a parallel here - but you're right, it's not an equal parallel. As I've said, there seems to be more of a collective malaise generated by writers who aren't as outspoken about their views, but whose views are tinged with little hope of conciliation. Perhaps what I'm suggesting is there's a difference between aggressive and passive-aggressive. This plays out on the micro-level and could be a larger pattern replayed on the macro level too.
