I don’t have a problem with your position on this, it seems fairly sensible and the more history that can be taught the better.
My interpretation comes from seeing the Weimar Republic, that society was economically in peril, heavily divided between the political left and right and provided the necessary ingredients for fascism to take hold. The same could also be argued of China and Soviet Russia, tho it is less obvious.
Anything which pushes people away from the centre ground and into heavily politicised positions will inevitably lead to civil war… you have called for it a few times. Civil unrest is the shining lure from which the angler fish of the strong-man politician emerges. We must be careful how we tread. Goldbergs cancellation, like many others isn’t on the grounds of hate-speech, it’s on the grounds of opinion. The Nazis codified the concept of ‘race’ around the Jewish population, and it is at odds with a modern interpretation. Her comments may have been ill informed or a difference of opinion - neither is hate speech. And so the world gets a little more radical as it spins on its axis.
Should western democracy collapse, You and I will both end up in trouble as we are far too opinionated and gobby to be left outside. Still, it’s fun to debate these things.
