I don't think it's entirely Katie's fault - this is a process of symbiosis. Like many writers, she's writing what is successful and the fault is really with Medium and with social media more generally. Members of the peanut gallery don't help and you'll see the same names popping up time and time again doing their freelance defence work. As for whether it's Katie's fault or not, I think the answer is partially -how many times do you see her defending her views in the comments sections? How much interaction does she do with those who agree with her vs those who disagree with her? How comfortable is she being held accountable for her writing - the fact she's blocked me tells you something. I have been absolutely raked over the coals by you and others in my comments section and never once have I considered blocking anyone.... I'm also sitting on a very slow growth of followers. Compare and contrast.
And yes, look more closely. I think there's a bunch of faux feminism happening under the surface and behind the very impressive rhetoric. Constantly calling out the male gaze whilst often choosing sexualised photos. I took exception to her age-gap story because I think it's disempowering to women. Adult women are either empowered humans capable of making choices or they're delicate creatures who need protecting. You can't argue both positions - and Jgln does. That's often the case with her position. I think her writing gives the indication it's far more balanced than it actually is - and I think that's reflected in her audience.
And yeah, I haven't been getting as many Eichy stories thrown my way recently. I'll hunt some tomorrow and start a fight or two in the comments. ;o)
