I don't think it's necessarily fanaticism, though I'm going to argue in many cases it is. The acquisition of money and resources without purpose is certainly fanatical, and consumerism in particular fills that niche - their reason for living becomes the acquisition of stuff, but I don't think that's necessarily what capitalism is about entirely.

The indigenous model of existence breaks down outside of a small group. As soon as the world became smaller, there needed to be a way for people from different groups to interact and a way to exchange goods and services. When those were out of alignment, such as the Incas/Spanish - then there were huge abuses and material land grabs - that was all about gold, but that wasn't really capitalism. That was gold based economies and feudalism.

What capitalism did was sit on top of that process and standardised working practices and move the seat of power from an individual autocrat (usually the king) to a group of merchants, traders, noblemen and then latterly the working class. Most Western democracies now utilise much of their working capital for the betterment of their own population. The next stage is for that capital to be distributed more evenly across the world. Fair trade needs to be come a tangible thing, not just a concept people use to sell things.

And yes, genocide, poverty, pollution and destruction have all happened; but so have international medical programmes, scientific advances and gainful employment and integration for refugees. I think we'll view capitalism through our own lenses (and that's fine) - I do think much of the wealth from the West needs to be downgraded and redistributed, we have to become nations of people committed to higher causes than the acquisition of stuff - and I think we're seeing that start to happen. Consumerism is unsustainable I think and there are greater things for the world than just having gadgets.
