I have an article due to come out about this very thing - and I'm afraid it's never quite as simple as it appears. Ukraine does have a fair few neo-nazi battallions fighting in the front line. That's not offered as an excuse for Russian military incursion into Ukraine, but it's a complicated situation. The right wing have been somewhat resurgent since 2014, it's not necessarily accurate to say that Putin is telling a barefaced lie - there's an element of truth to what he's put out, but he's definitely using it for his own ends. The West are downplaying the whole Neo-Nazi stuff too, particular around the Mariopaul area - but a quick check on the credentials of the Azov Battallion suggest a) you'd want them on your side during a war and b) once the war is over, you'd definitely not want them on your side anymore. As I said.... complicated.
