I have done a little of apples and oranges comparison - but the same thing happens at the elite level in the arts too. A recent Oscar winner came straight out of University at the age of 23 and got a job working with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s wife in a straight script commission. No qualifications, no portfolio, just straight in. Like you’d done a few Sunday games and got put into the Man United back four. She isn’t an exceptional writer (though not terrible). Her career was boosted significantly a few years ago when she took over series 2 and 3 of a very popular TV show, it was pretty much gifted to her by one of her closest friends who’d written season 1. The drop off in quality was very noticeable (in my opinion anyway)

Her working life has simply been floating from one success to another as a writer and director. She’s just penned the libretto for Lloyd Webber’s latest musical. I’m sure she’s lovely, but when you read between the lines of the elite writers in the U.K, you’ll see even at the top level this is all wheels within wheels.
