I haven't convenienty forgotten those facts at all. But we have to be very careful when we begin the Nazi argument - because it is so easily dismissed and thrown out. When someone is accused of being 'a Nazi' for things that people don't like or agree with - it devalues the meaning of the word. And words matter in these circumstances.

Trump is a demagogue, a racist, a narcissist and an idiot - but he is not a Nazi. He barely qualifies as a fascist because he is being held by the checks and balances of the American political system and supreme court. That is still stopping him from being a dictator and, for the most part, working.

What Trump has demonstrated is that there is a massive hole in the constitution for when Americans vote in someone who lacks the intellectual rigour or social intelligence to lead. You can't get rid of him and he's running the country into the floor and the republicans are letting him. Even that still doesn't make him a Nazi. The word has a very specific historical and social significance - one that shouldn't be thrown around with reckless abandon.

You have no idea whether I'm Jewish or not, and it's irrelevent to the discussion at hand. As a jewish person you were no doubt raised to beware of anti-semitism. Both the left and the right exhibit anti-semitic sentiment from time to time, and Trump is no exception... but as with all things Trump the water is muddied, his rhetoric is chaotic, wild and occasionally anti-semitic, but he also recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Hard to imagine Hitler signing that particular executive order.

Society has a responsibility to use words properly, else they lose their impact and their meaning. Nazi has a very particular place in Jewish history and is a product of the absolute darkest of human impulses in the 20th Century. When we use it to describe people we politically disagree with, we sanitise it beyond recognition and it becomes meaningless. We forget the original meaning of the word itself.
