I just wrote an article about what British people know about US American Presidents (not much). I'd never heard of Buchanan - but I'm delighted my powers of deductive reasoning weren't far off.

'I’m not sure what he did… but I’ve heard the name, probably on the Ken Burns documentary about the Civil War. In his Wikipedia picture he looks exhausted. I can see Lincoln looming so we’re not far from the civil war and Buchanan doesn’t look like a soldier. I bet his Presidency was spent watching people flounce off into side-rooms for warmongering. An American Neville Chamberlain.'
