I read three pages of the first book and became a fundamentalist Christian.
Just kidding. It's perfectly possible as an adult to rationalise messages inherent in literature and to dismiss them. You have done exactly that. Children, as a general rule, are smarter than they seem and will turn into adults who can contextualise. I remember how disappointed I was that Aslan was a metaphor for Jesus - I was eight and already a fairly committed atheist.
As another general rule, bigotry and racism tends to be enacted by people who don't read very much - led by a few people who read a great deal of the same book. Sure, Lewis is problematic but so is everybody who wrote anything before yesterday in someone's eyes. Adults can contextualise. Particularly those of us who read a lot.
The stories are good. The messaging is off. We aren't five and we can deal with it. :o)
