I reckon Spotify should let market forces win out on this one - and I think they will. The problem with call out culture is it becomes less effective the more it's used.
If we were to go through Medium with a universal rule that said 'any piece which denigrates a group of people on an immutable characteristic like race now qualifies as hate speech and is against the terms and conditions of the platform' - there'd be whole swathes of writers removed from this platform. Many of them BIPOC.
That's what motivated me to write this:
The problem is, of course, that writing in tune with the general left consensus allows people on this site to dress up their bigotry as profound insight. It gets lapped up by people determined to virtue signal. Plenty of writers on this site preach to the converted - and it's very easy to make good money bashing white conservative men in particular.
But, if we're going to accept it from one side, we must accept it from both. If Medium is prepared to heavily monetise some of the articles written by Marley K or promoted on Fearless She Wrote - then we cannot call foul when it happens on the other side. Conservative men, which Peterson is (less convinced about Rogan) have the right to reply. As left-wing writers we must get our own house in order first.
And it isn't in any order at all.
