I subscribe to Medium to have intelligent conversations (and because there is a reward for writing). I could write on Facebook and Twitter but I do neither… they aren’t free. They’re using my information and using my time.
If you can have free mobile games then there is a hidden cost…. But there’s also a booming games industry which has high quality products you can do instead. People pay a lot of money to have a better experience because the games require more skill, have better graphics and are arguably more fun.
I don’t know enough about machine learning and algorithms to know if you can promote quality, but I’d like to think it’s possible. I occasionally meet people on this site whose followings dwarf my own, but whose financial return on their time investment isn’t comparable with mine. I don’t care about the money, but it is interesting and I can only conclude that the social aspect of the platform (followers) is less important than the amount you’re read (quality of work or subject matter chosen). That’s why I’m hopeful for Medium and hopeful it’ll develop a way of weeding out financial reward for writing about financial reward.
I’m far happier on Medium than I would be on Twitter and have no plans to leave the former or rejoin the latter.
