I think a lot of the most ardent adherents will destroy themselves in smaller and smaller groups while the majority middle ground rejects them into the fringes of the internet. I think there's been a fear of challenging these people which has been gradually subsiding - when I first wrote my 'We did it, everything is racist and patriarchal now' at the beginning of last year - I was genuinely surprised at the support it got. I put my chances of staying on the platform at about 20%, as Medium was such a woke love in.
But I think there are a lot of people who genuinely feel frustrated and annoyed about the disproportionate amount of time and leverage given to these positions. Medium have stopped endorsing them quite so heavily now and there's no longer free money available for the most egregious rhetoricians.
I think we'll move back to a position of actual liberalism. I've lost count of the amount of times I've been called a hateful bigot for insisting that plurality of views (even ones you don't agree with) is necessary for a functioning liberal society. I hope we swing back to the centre very soon.
