I think as part of a commitment that everyone should make here is to read and champion newer writers. Everyone was new once and, if you leave money aside for a second, it is genuinely a great place to write.
I became a Medium friend for the opposite reason and am more hopeful than you about the ecosystem. I think medium is decentralising and placing more faith in its committed readers - and what this means to me is that boosting just became less relevant. That’s a relief because I’ve seen the list of boost nominators and some of them are idiots. You can write a piece and submit it to a publication which will champion it for your echo chamber…. Or you can just write good pieces and join a community with zero expectations.
If you write regularly and engage regularly then a) you get better at writing and b) you get readers. You know I’ll show up to disagree with you on identity politics and agree with you on socialism. You earned the right to my four times the income by virtue of cultivating engagement, not being set to broadcast and not immediately blocking me when you think I’m wrong.
Medium is giving those of us who have earned a side hustle here a chance to do socialism properly and spread the wealth through trickle down economics - we lefties have to prove it works.
Just my two cents. Sorry, eight cents.
