I think it's more than possible for two opposing groups to share a common objective without intertwining their world views. Proportional representational democracy is founded on that principle.
I think the further into identity politics the ideological left pushes, the further the centre ground and moderates will push to the right. It's not that gender as a concept doesn't need to be explored more fully and brought into public discourse, I think it's primarily that information and action are arriving at the same time in a sort of ideological leftist LGBTQ+ Blitzkreig. 'Here's our latest definition of gender and a fait acccompli. Change your stance to reflect what 've just developed or you'll be labelled as transphobic, named, shamed and thrown under the outrage bus.
Butler is likely correct that people need to read more, that wouldn't have sat nicely with the synthetic lefty-liberal readership of the Guardian - but ideas like these take time to embed and if the LGBTQ+ communtiy want moderates on their side rather than cosying up to the nearest fascists, they need to take their foot off the accelerator. They need to do this because the wheels are spinning, the car isn't going anywhere and various constituent parts of the LGBTQ+ car are starting to fall apart.
